Goyfriend – Jewish/Slavic Intercultural Dialog in Song!
December 25, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
$20CATCH and the Yiddish New York Festival are excited to feature an evening of music by leading emerging artists in the international klezmer scene. Goyfriend/Друг-Гой (awesome name!) is an exciting new collaboration exploring Jewish/Slavic intercultural dialog through song by the Litvakus Ensemble, led by charismatic Belarussian-Jewish clarinetist Zisl Slepovitch and the divine Berlin-based, Latvian-Yiddish chanteuse Sasha Lurje. The evening also features a rising new force on the Brooklyn Yiddish music scene – Tsibele. Yes, that means “onions” in Slavic languages and Yiddish, and this band lives up to its name in delivering Yiddish music with Balkan spicing. Tsibele is Eleonore Weill (vocals, flutes, hurdy-gurdy), Eva Boodman (trumpet), Hannah Temple (accordion), Zoe Aqua (violin) and Zoe Guigueno (bass). The night will close with a raucous set of ecstatic Hasidic simkhe music, as Jordan Hirsch and Overnight Kugel perform classic Hasidic wedding music of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Jill Gellerman will lead dancing.
No reserved seating, tickets are available at the door! Presented as part of Echoes of the Revolution.
